The book features Nick's visionary cartoons and comic strips in his trademark melting and distorting style influenced by the psychedelic art of the 1960s that has been refined over the past 3 decades in a unique line and style of his own.
A large format black and white A3 book of 24 pages, this book was printed in house with the Press' Risograph machine onto 100 gsm off white paper and then painstakingly handbound by the artist into an edition of 90 copies. Extricate 8
The Eighth issue of David Birchalls on going comic of true stories features 3 long strips spread over 64 A5 pages, stencil printed black on white 100gsm paper.
The first of these 'The Song of the Birds' is a slow building narrative accumlation of page sized images rising to a heady climax, this is contrasted with the more conventially organised 'The Greeks are Coming' which retells the myth of the birth of Athena amidst a botched operation in a modern day asylum. The final story 'The Return of Harry the Cat' tells a simple tale of friends drinking and meeting curious characters.
This comic was brewed and drawn over a long stretch of time moving and travelling; a cottage at Bryn Cllwyd in Wales, a living room table in Birstall, Leicestershire, the mountain village of Vasiliko on the Greek Peleponesus and at Cow Lane Studios in Salford watching a huge pile of dirt moving from left to right.
The original cover was a handprinted linocut of the Goat God Pan vibrating gently as he plays his pipes; based on a bronze in the Athens Musuem. Those have now sadly sold out but the second edition has a beautifully recreated risograph stencil version of the linocut in black and red on heavy weight 220 gsm water colour paper.
